We will leave the bustling Hanoi behind for a 250-kilometer journey heading north to Ba Be National Park, one of Vietnam’s largest natural lakes. Along the way, gentle hills give way to scenic valleys and towering limestone formations, home to many bird species and ethnic minorities including the Tay, Red Dao, and Hmong.
Upon arrival, take time to explore Hua Ma Cave, a hidden grotto with thousands of stalactites that shimmer in the dim light. As the day winds down, enjoy a leisurely walk around the village and settle into a traditional Tay house, where the quiet way of life unfolds in every detail.
Dinner and overnight in a local house (homestay).
Today invites you into the heart of Ba Be with a guided trek through its lush mountains. You’ll pass by Tay, Dao, and Hmong villages, each offering a glimpse into their daily rhythm and age-old customs.
After lunch, the afternoon will drift by on a boat ride along the Nang River - a peaceful way to discover Ba Be Lake, Puong Grotto, Dau Dang Waterfall, and tiny Window Island. The green, poetic scenery offers a moment of deep calm and connection with nature.
Dinner and overnight in a local house (homestay).
After breakfast, the road continues to Cao Bang and on to Trung Khanh, where the quiet beauty of the northern borderland begins to reveal itself. Fields of rice, scattered stilt houses, and children waving from roadside paths create a moving portrait of rural life.
Later in the day, Ban Gioc Waterfall welcomes you with its magnificent cascade - known as the fourth-largest waterfall in the world. Take time to pause, breathe, and maybe even drift near the falls on a bamboo raft.
Dinner and overnight in a local house (homestay).
The morning begins with a short drive to Nguom Ngao Cave, where imagination comes alive in chambers filled with extraordinary stalactite formations.
From there, leave Cao Bang behind and journey toward Lang Son, where the roadside scenery continues to tell stories of highland life. Make a stop at To Thi Mountain, a local legend in stone, before settling in for the night.
Overnight in Lang Son.
As the landscape changes from mountains to coast, the road takes you to Ha Long Bay - a place where limestone pillars rise from emerald waters.
Board a boat at noon to begin a gentle cruise through the bay, pausing to visit karst caves, take a swim, or simply unwind on the sundeck with a breeze at your back. After dinner on board, the quiet rhythm of the water becomes your lullaby.
Overnight on cruise.
Greet the morning with a warm cup of tea or coffee and soak in the last views of the bay while the boat continues its slow glide.
After brunch on board, return to the wharf and begin the drive back to Hanoi.
Arrive in the city by late afternoon - full circle, with memories tucked gently into your journey.
